Centrifugal fans in Nairobi Kenya

Description

Centrifugal fans, also known as blower fans or squirrel cage fans, are mechanical devices used to move air or gases by converting rotational energy into airflow. Unlike axial fans, which move air parallel to the fan’s axis, centrifugal fans move air perpendicular to the fan’s inlet. They are widely used in industrial, HVAC, and ventilation systems due to their ability to generate higher pressures and handle larger volumes of air or gas efficiently.

Applications of Centrifugal Fans

1.HVAC Systems : They are widely used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They provide efficient airflow for ventilation, heating, and cooling applications.
2.Industrial Ventilation : In industrial settings, centrifugal fans are used to ventilate factories, warehouses, and plants by removing dust, fumes, smoke, or other harmful particulates. They are also used in paint booths and chemical processing facilities for fume extraction.
3.Dust Collection Systems : They are often used in dust collection systems to capture and remove dust and particulates generated by industrial processes such as cutting, grinding, or machining.
4.Material Handling : They are used in material handling systems to transport light materials such as sawdust, grain, or pellets. This is done by moving the air that carries the materials through a duct system.
5.Boilers and Furnaces : They are used in boilers and furnaces to supply the necessary air for combustion. They also help remove combustion gases from the system, improving efficiency and safety.
6.Exhaust Systems : In commercial kitchens, chemical labs, or industrial facilities, they are used in exhaust systems to remove harmful fumes, gases, or smoke from the workspace.

How Centrifugal Fans Work:

  1. Air Intake: Air or gas enters the fan through the center, also called the inlet or eye of the impeller.
  2. Impeller Rotation: The impeller, which consists of a series of curved blades, rotates at high speed, typically driven by an electric motor. As the blades rotate, they impart kinetic energy to the air, forcing it outward due to centrifugal force.
  3. Air Expulsion: The air is forced to move radially outward from the center of the impeller into the fan housing. The shape of the housing, usually a scroll or volute, directs the air to the outlet at a higher velocity and pressure.
  4. Increased Pressure: As the air moves through the fan, its pressure increases due to the design of the impeller and the fan housing. This allows centrifugal fans to generate higher pressure compared to axial fans, which simply move air in a straight line.
